Making waves on Westminster: One Way Gallery

Opening Saturday: One Way Gallery Pre-Fall Reception

This Saturday night will mark the second reception for One Way Gallery’s downtown gallery, and a statement about the gallery's increasing impact on the Downcity arts landscape.

Visiting One Way Gallery is like attending an affordable art fair, but instead of having to travel hours to be in a crowded tent, collectors only need to come downtown to find affordable innovative emerging contemporary work.  Owners Stephen Cook and Christian Harder opened a pop-up gallery on Westminster Street this past summer as an experiment, but it seems that the pop-up has turned into a satellite of their primary Narragansett location.  Unlike so many other art spaces in Rhode Island, One Way does not primarily put on group or solo exhibitions or shows based on a theme.  They are constantly rotating their work to keep the space fresh versus keeping one show of one or a few artists up for several weeks.

The perfect place to start your contemporary art collection

If you have thought about buying art before, but have not quite found the courage yet, One Way is perfect place to start your contemporary collection or add to it.  For their pre-fall reception, they will be exhibiting new work from their

current artists, as well as new from the new additions to their artist line-up.  Cook and Harder choose the artists they represent based on their own personal tastes, but also based on the belief that Rhode Island needs to see the work of these artists.  One Way represents local artists, but they also bring in artists from all over the country, which balances out visions within the gallery.

This Saturday, the work to look out for at the opening will be new work by Scott Dinge and artist Evoker.  Brooklyn- based artist Morgan Blair will also be showing with the gallery for the first time.  There will also be new paintings by Buck Hastings as well as Stephen Cook, who is a working artist alongside running the gallery.  Even though there is always new work circulating, it will be very exciting to see the space completely re-curated.

A missed deadline becomes an opportunity

The idea for a downtown location happened serendipitously after missing a deadline for the Providence Art Festival and a phone call from Cornish Associates. If you spend any time talking with Cook or Harder, they never seem daunted by undertakings as more opportunities come their way, adding adrenaline junkie to their list of hats.  It is impossible to not get caught up in their excitement and enthusiasm though for the ongoing visibility downtown and the reciprocal effect the location has had on the artists and gallery.  September is probably the best month to feel the good vibrations from the art community in Rhode Island, and there is a lot of see this week, but One Way Gallery is definitely not to be overlooked.

One Way Gallery Providence, 231 Westminster St, Providence, 228-6610.  Hours Mon, Tue- Sat 11 am- 6 pm, Sunday 12pm -5 pm, also by appointment. Opening Saturday September 17 7-10pm.
