NEW: Which RI College Named Hippest Campus in America?
Thursday, December 15, 2011
Although they may be too hip to care, a Rhode Island college has been named to a brand-new list of the 10 Most Hipster Campuses in America.
College Magazine has named its big 10 of where the "art-loving, flannel-wearing, vegan-eating youths" are going to college right now, and the Rhode Island School of Design has landed on the list at an incredibly hip (or unhip for making any list) #4.
Art + fashion = hipness
Rhode Island's renowned art school is "the place to go if you're artistically inclined," writes College Magazine's Emily Farra (who is herself an Art History and Journalism major at Indiana University). Farra cites RISD's broad and deep selection of "artsy majors" as primary evidence, with a special call-out to the school's major in fashion design (RISD beats out fashion powerhouse Parsons The New School by one spot in the ranking).
Vegan radio
"A delightful bonus: vegetarian and vegan students can appreciate RISD's 'Vegan Radio' which explores different types of diets and often brings in experts for interviews," writes Farra.
The most hipster campus this year? NYU took the #1 spot, followed by New York's Fashion Institute of Technology at #2, and Boston's Emerson College, which hosts its own college fashion blog, The Emerson College Fashion Society, at #3.
Brown University, which nabbed a Huffington Post laurel earlier this year for being a Hipster Campus, did not make College Magazine's Top 10. Filling out the list were Parsons at #5, followed by UCLA, UC Berkeley, Yale, Carnegie Mellon, and Georgetown University, in order.
