Thursday, July 26, 2012
A new smart phone application, launched Wednesday in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and the Chesapeake Region, will allow people to find safe beaches and swimming areas to recreate and enjoy their waterways.
"The Swim Guide" is free and will be available on the App Store, Google Play, or at www.theswimguide.org.
It is provided by Waterkeeper Alliance, which is a network of 200 water protection groups worldwide.

"The Swim Guide provides a free, easy to use way for beach goers to find a beach where their families can swim safely." While Rhode Island's beaches are not yet listed, the Guide is adding beaches constantly. For Rhode Islanders who may be concerned with the state's recent water quality ranking by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), it will be a perfect tool.
The Swim Guide utilizes water quality monitoring data from government authorities to determine the water quality at nearly 2,500 beaches in the U.S. and is frequently updated.
In addition to the locations in the northeast, the Swim Guide includes descriptions and photographs of beaches across North America.
