NEW: Providence Named Top Affordable Getaway by Travel + Leisure

Wednesday, February 08, 2012

So much, for such a reasonable price: Providence makes Top 20 Affordable Getaways ranking.

Providence is not only is full of riches, but evidently, for a great price. The capital city has just made the Top 20 Best Affordable US Cities Getaways for 2012, courtesy of the getaway gurus at Travel + Leisure magazine.

Providence snagged the #12 designation on this year's brand-new ranking, based on T+L's annual America's Favorite Cities survey.  The ranking was topped by Kansas City, MO, followed by Salt Lake City, UT, and Nashville, TN, at #2 and #3, respectively. San Juan, Puerto Rico, and San Antonio, TX, rounded out the Top 5. New England neighbor Portland, ME, came in at #7.

Enough of the stay cation

According to T+L's Katrina Brown Hunt, finding great deals is a priority for "plenty of travelers who wish to trade in stay cations for real vacations." Tim Leffel, author of The World's Cheapest Destinations, tells T+L that he's seen a lot of pent-up demand from "people who have working more hours and taking less time off."

What makes a city a great value?

Travel + Leisure readers participating in the magazine's annual survey considered reasonably priced hotels and restaurants as well as budget-friendly theater tickets, free museums, or low gas prices. Being able to explore a city by foot also boosts affordability, according to T+L.

Providence

Compared to nearby Boston, which ranked #29 for affordability, Providence was pronounced a true bargain by T+L. "Its art scene and cool design shops ranked well, and you can wander the Rhode Island School of Design’s museum for free on Sunday mornings," according to the magazine. T+L's only misstep was to recommend a $1.99 burger at Stanley's, which has closed its Providence location. But any local can turn a traveler on to a cheap and delicious burger at Haven Brothers (after dark, at least).

Kudos to Providence. Just one correction to the Golocal note. There is nothing cheap about burgers at Haven Brothers. They are like $4 plain. Add $2 for cheese, $0.50 for pickles, $0.25 for a napkin, etc... Tasty, yes. Cheap, not exactly.
