NEW: Providence #27 Manliest City in America

Come at me, bro: The Manly City's Mayor Taveras
Providence is the #27 manliest city in America, up a 6-pack from last year's ranking in COMBOS "America's Manliest Cities" study. (For those who don't speak beer, that's up six places.)
More good news: Rhode Island's capital city is manliest city in all of New England, and kicked the ass of Boston, which dropped 14 spots to a girlish #45.
What kind of math goes into manliness?
To get their rankings, COMBOS takes the 50 largest cities in America, and counts up Y-chromosome indicators like number of home improvement stores, steak houses, "manly occupations" and motorcycles per capita. But there's more. COMBOS nails cities for stuff like "an excess of cupcake shops and fancy furniture stores".
An added plus this year: COMBOS created a Board of Manliness that included Lou Ferrigno and Sergeant Slaughter to weigh in on the data. Which means we've got superheroes and pro wrestlers as our wingmen.
The manliest cities of 2011
Nashville, TN, took the top spot this year (with kudos from the panel of manliness for rodeos, pickup trucks, and home improvement stores). The country capital bested Charlotte, NC which was the title-holder last year. Oklahoma City, OK made a huge run from #25 last year to #3 this year. Memphis, TN and Columbia, SC rounded out the top 5.
More cupcakes than crowbars
This year's least-manly cities are, in descending order: Rochester, NY, Oakland, San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles, CA. How fitting that the very guy who inspired the phrase "girlie-man," Arnold Schwarzenegger, is the retired governor of the state with the four lowest-ranking manly cities.

What a misogynistic piece of garbage of an article. You could choose to report on this without denigrating women, but instead use "girlish" as an insult. I'm once again embarrassed by your editorial standards.

Mr. Brown, Governor Irrelevant moved to Warwick recently. That's good, because it was his voting address, anyway, even though he had a Homestead exemption on his $million digs in Providence. It gets confusing, becaue all his vehicles are registered to the wife's property in Exeter. This is the guy who wants a tax increase on the rest of us. At any rate, I imagine the city's macho rating moved up more than a couple of notches when Irrelevant bolted.

Mayor T: from one Classical guy to another, you do us proud. I didn't know we "geeks" could look that buff. Are you going to replace Mercury in the Yearbook?

You know the old saying from Oldsmobile when they had the ad campaign, "we are not your fathers Oldsmobile'...well those are my thoughts on John Chaffee vs the son...he is NOT his father for sure!
He has no clue and I will say I know this has nothing to do with the manly article...just can't stand this guy but then again I have not been in a union since my days as a kid at a supermarket.

Hey Jenn, it sounds like you might be a misandrist who has issues with men and masculinity. The "girlie" comment was targeted for certain MALES for not conforming to stereotypes of masculinity -- thus is anything being denigrating to them! Otherwise, the fact is there are more women than men in Providence, and what's keeping them here, the job market???
