The RI Commissioner joins the ranks of the Boston and Pawtucket Red Sox, U.S. Senator Jack Reed and others. Last year’s recipient was Geoffrey Canada, who heads New York’s “Harlem Children’s Zone,” which is the inspiration for Family Service of Rhode Island’s school-based work in South Providence. Mr. Canada was one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world.
Education visionary
“We are honoring another education visionary this year,” said Family Service of Rhode Island CEO Margaret Holland McDuff. “Her vision, her leadership, her energy have been an inspiration. Most importantly, she shares a key attribute of all our recipients: a deep unwavering commitment to brighter futures for children.”
“I am deeply honored that Family Service of Rhode Island will present me with the Brighter Futures Award, which I will be proud to accept on behalf of the school leaders, teachers, students, and families in our state who work hard every day to transform our schools and to prepare for success,” said Commissioner Gist. “I share with the folks at Family Service a commitment to and a faith in a brighter future for the children of Rhode Island, and I will continue to work tirelessly with Family Service and other nonprofit agencies to lead our schools toward greatness."
October 2 luncheon
Gist will receive the award at an October 2nd luncheon at the Rhode Island Convention Center, beginning at noon. The luncheon is a major fundraiser for Family Service of Rhode Island, a non-profit serving traumatized and abused children, families in poverty, and others in need across the state. The luncheon has become a paramount event since it was established in 2005, regularly drawing about 500 attendees from the business community, government, and other sectors. Seats are available through www.familyserviceri.org, by calling (401) 519-2274, or emailing hugst@familyserviceri.org.

Thanks for the new graduation requirement using NCAP testing, this should really help the 44% of all students current enrolled in RI schools who will not get a diploma. Clearly Ms Gist you care about the 84% of special education students who will graduate this year with no diploma. As well the 70% of African American and Latino students who will also fail to get a diploma. A true visionary who cares about all our children. Congratulations

Ms. Gist is not concerned with children graduating. She is concerned about being able to complete her PhD. paid for by the taxpayers. Then she's outta here, probably to Washington where she never sold her home. Her focus on NECAP and teaching to the test are an indication that she doesn't care one iota about the kids.

Still waiting for those incredibly brilliant ideas and mind blowing projects that are going to set RI apart from the rest of the country. Must be tough to be so mediocre, so average, and so dull. We have a lot of really good educators in this state but instead we had to troll around for a edu-wonk from DC to screw things up. How much money has she cost the state in "revamping" the Dept. of Ed? Time for Governor Daffy Duck to come out of hiding and tell Deb her evaluation came in at a 2.

How much money is Family Services collecting from the Central Falls school district to pay for all the "behavior specialists"? Family Services hasn't disclosed that Julia Steiny is on their board who also receives a huge consultancy fee from CF. No conflict of interest for Family Services. Surprised they didn't choose Fran Gallo....guess her vision isn't so "bright."

Has anybody seen the size of her staff? Hope the taxpayers who are falling in love with her enjoy the "business" of education when the admin costs continue to sky rocket.

Check out this groups website and who they help. They will be going nuts when the masses who cannot get the new diploma and are only given a certificate of attendance. If I was a latina/o I would be in touch with the ACLU. It is amazing that the ACLU is silent on this, but is involved in so much nonsense such as protecting murderers.
