The kids down the hall: We Should Worry gets off-campus this weekend

Who needs to worry when you’re part of a rockin’ band? We Should Worry, hailing from Brown University, is a hot new student band on the Providence market. The band heads off-campus this Friday at the Brooklyn Tea and Coffee House in Providence.

The band combines indie rock and alternative folk to create a unique new sound. They play every instrument from the accordion to the mandolin. “We're like if Mumford & Sons got jiggy with Neutral Milk Hotel after a blind date set up by The Mountain Goats,” frontman Ben Resnik says. “We want to make something that’s intimate and personal to listen to, but we try to make it as lively and energetic as possible because nobody likes listening to a sad song and feeling sorry for themselves. They like listening to a song and going 'Yeah!' And then dancing. Dancing is key.”

From screamo/hardcore to classically trained

The eight member band draws from a variety of backgrounds, according to pianist Charles Chretien, "from a screamo/hardcore guitarist to a classically trained violinist, and all have different influences, which leads us to play some fairly unusual music.” Ben Resnik shares lead guitar and lead vocals with Lizzy Callas. Sydney Island is a firework of bright red curly hair with a killer voice and a passion for the accordion. David Lee is a band all in himself, able to rock a banjo, guitar, singing saw, piano, violin, and melodica. Bennett Knox is on mandolin; Adam Asher and Eric Foreman on bass. Chretien, from France, completes the ensemble.

“It’s amazing and slightly disturbing when I think about how talented everyone else in the band is. Seriously, I don't know I haven't been kicked out yet," says Foreman.  “I think college makes sure that you have something to worry about at all times, but I think that’s why we all like playing music, because it gets your head off of the negative stuff for a while.”

Formed on Facebook

The origin of the band can be traced back to a Facebook message between Sydney and Ben, leading to a long-distance recording of Little Lion Man, by Mumford and Sons. “We actually recorded some stuff via emailing garage-band files back and forth, me in DC, her in Arizona, and it sounded surprisingly good!” Ben says. “The first time any of us actually met in person was our very first day at Brown. We hit it off as a group, started practicing for an open mic night, and the rest is history!”

So far the band has played several open mic events around Providence and Brown University as well as occasionally busking for the public. They will be putting on shows over the winter in Providence and are hoping to put out a single or an EP before the year is out so keep your eyes peeled for this new band to light up the Providence scene.

This Friday they will be performing an eclectic set of songs at the quaint Brooklyn Tea and Coffee House. If opening act, Danny Delaney, doesn’t win you over with his down-to-earth guitar and vocal, We Should Worry will, with a brand new selection of tunes.

Watch them live, here.

We Should Worry at Brooklyn Coffee Teahouse, 209 Douglas Avenue, Providence. $5 for public, $3 for students. Follow the band on Facebook, here.
