Barrington is getting ready to go golf-crazy next week.

The finest 150+ young women in golf's amateur ranks will fill the greens of the Rhode Island Country Club beginning Monday, as the US Women's Amateur Championship of the US Golf Association turns the East Bay into a mecca for lovers of the sport.

Organizers are expecting 10,000 fans at the 6-day event, which kicks off August 8th. Last year's champion, Pepperdine star Danielle Kang, returns to defend her title from 156 challengers from 18 countries, including fellow superstar collegiates.

The purity of the competition, and the lack of professional trappings like grandstands and high-profile endorsements, makes this a fan's paradise. In fact, says David Piccerelli, co-chair of the event, fans are encouraged to walk the fairways with the golfers.

It's also a plum for RICC, which has hosted the event three times before, to bring the event back on its own 100th anniversary. For more information on the events next week, go here.
