Tonight, Gallery Z on Federal Hill in Providence celebrates two major milestones: it’s 10-year anniversary, and the opening of it’s 100th exhibit featuring works by 22 artists participating in NetWorks shows produced by Joseph A. Chazan, M.D. “We’re very excited,” said gallery owner Bérge Ara Zobian, who concedes that the past decade seems to have flown by in an instant.

Big Dreams

Zobian, a native Armenian, came to this country from Lebanon when he was just 14 years old. It was 1971, and after settling in New York City, headed to New England, finally settling in Providence in 1983. The skilled photographer curated at galleries and art facilities for more than 16 years before finally deciding to bite the bullet and launch his own venture. His first studio was on Amherst Street on Federal Hill, but when neighboring spaces became available on Atwells Avenue in 2003, he jumped at the opportunity to be in the heart of the historic neighborhood.

Ten Years of Original Art

Gallery Z is proud to continue to display only original fine art, with no prints or reproductions on display, including no digital photography; only prints from film. Representing 140 internationally acclaimed artists including 15-20 based in Rhode Island can be demanding, especially when delicate egos and come into play, he says, but it’s been worth every minute.
