With the unveiling of the annual Recovery Quilt, the Rhode Island recovery community has kick off National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.

The Recovery Quilt Project, started in 2006, is an important part of the annual celebration of Recovery Month in Rhode Island. Comprised of individual squares prepared by Rhode Islanders in recovery, their family members, and friends, the quilt is assembled by a sponsoring agency and its clients. The 2010 Recovery Quilt sponsoring agency is Vantage Point, a West Warwick-based agency that provides intervention, education, prevention, and counseling for individuals, couples, and families.

For more than 20 years, states across the nation have celebrated Recovery Month by working to improve the lives of millions of Americans in need of treatment and recovery services, celebrating individuals who have achieved long-term recovery, and acknowledging those working in the field who provide treatment and recovery services. The 2010 theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Now More Than Ever!” emphasizes the prevalence in our society of high stress levels, which can potentially lead to the onset and relapse of mental health and substance use disorders.

Throughout September, supporters will hold and attend events across the state in celebration of Recovery Month. For more information, visit www.recovery.gov or www.closethegapri.org.
