Eat, drink, and be Zen: the Namaste Rhode Island Yoga Ball

Did you ever think you'd read "Zen" and "gala" together in the same sentence?

Now you have, because Rhode Island is getting ready for one of the most creative fundraisers in recent memory: The Namaste Rhode Island Yoga Ball.

And no, not the thing you stretch out on. We're talking a ball in the fun, party-sense of the word, planned for November 11 at the Westin Hotel, and put together by some community-minded yogis, Lisa Golde and Bryna Rene (owner and teacher, respectively, at Body Kneads Yoga in Cranston). Proceeds will benefit Crossroads Rhode Island's Women Shelter.

Like the Bartender's Ball, only add a splash of Zen

"It's a bit like the Bartender's Ball, only for yoga students, yoga teachers, any anyone interested in personal and community wellness," says Rene. "It will be a fantastic opportunity for members of the RI yoga community to network, mingle, and let loose in the name of the common good."

The event will open with a two-hour yoga practice and music meditation led by Debbie Valois of Sundance and Rene.

After yoga, comes cocktails

Then, like all good yoga practices, cocktails come next, and a silent auction (look for donations from Jessica Ricci jewelry, La Gondola Providence, Elements of Yoga, Sundance massage gift certificates, and more items, which will be updated on the event's Web site, here. Henna by Heather will be on hand for henna tattoos. Finally, a full-seated 3-course dinner will be served after cocktails, followed by a riotous dance party with Bollywood tunes by DJ Dez.

Rene promises the yoga will not be hot, and therefore the sweating will be minimal and everyone can enjoy transitioning from practice to partying.

Namaste Rhode Island Yoga Ball, November 11, 4-11pm, The Westin Hotel, Providence. People can come for just the yoga class ($35), just cocktails and dinner ($50), or both ($75). Proceeds will go to Crossroads. For more information go to www.namaste-ri.com.
