MUSIC: Consuelo’s Revenge Unleashes Vengeance At The Parlour
Saturday, August 03, 2013
Folk bands are a dime a dozen in Providence, and sometimes you have to look very hard to see who brings more than just a mandolin and a banjo. Enter Consuelo's Revenge, an amazing group of talented musicians who vary in roots, blues and gypsy styles that offer a distinct variety to separate themselves from their contemporaries. They headlined a two-band bill with alt-rock power trio Su Casa opening up the night. With a show like this, you knew it was going to be a fantastic evening of local music in The Creative Capital. Were you looking to celebrate your thirsty Thursday? You should have looked no further than The Parlour.
Su Casa
A three piece band locally based in Providence, Su Casa took the stage with an arrangement of a keyboard, drums and guitars while exuding alternative rock dittys that I thoroughly enjoyed. My favorite part of their performance was their drummer being all over place while keeping a steady beat, a true feast for the ears and eyes. They reminded me a little bit of Buffalo Tom & Wilco but the keys sounded like something straight out of a 70's Billy Joel song. It was classic & modern music with a lot of heart, I thought Su Casa were pretty good and I'd like to see them again.
Consuelo's Revenage
Consuelo's Revenge finished off the night by sounding pristine and rocking The Parlour to no end. Wonderful and lovely tunes filled the room during a spectacular performance that included "Black Ball Row", "Pasadena", "Forest Flower Waltz", "When I Die", "Just The Drugs", "Sweet Mercy Brown", "Freedom", "Well, Well, Well" and "Henry Lee". After the initial performance, nobody was gonna leave and they were asking for one more song. Consuelo's Revenge then went into a rendition of The Rolling Stones' "Sweet Virginia" to conclude an energetic display of music excellence. You should get the self-titled debut from Consuelo's Revenge because its one of the best local albums to come out so far this year, and you should always stop by The Parlour. They always have something cool going on every night to enjoy while indulging a refreshing beverage and some tasty grub.
