It's always wonderful when something new graces your ears and makes a wild impression on you, and that's what just local supergroup Burlapen did at The Met in Pawtucket this past Tuesday. The Silks' Tyler-James Kelly and Milk were all part of the show, a holy trinity of awesome music for a fantastic night. The Met is always a fun place to catch a show, with historical artwork from the old Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel to please the eyes and the music on the stage always pleases the ears.

Tyler-James Kelly

I don't know what's better, seeing Tyler-James Kelly play solo or with The Silks? He kicked things off with his electric down home blues style, if Tyler-James' songs don't hit your soul like a scorched bed of roses I don't know what will. "Deer River Blues", "Trouble", "Turn Me On", "Home Again" ,"Gravedigger" and "Mean Ol' Woman" highlighted a brilliant performance that ignited the crowd. Once you hear Tyler-James' soulful voice, there's nothing quite like it. The Silks will be playing next at Dusk in Providence on June 2nd as part of a series of benefits for Brown Bird's David Lamb going on over the next couple weeks. Witness one of the best blues bands around today all for a worthy cause.

Milk

A groovy rock & roll hand straight out of Boston, Milk went on next and they had my eyes bugging out while I saw how earth-shatteringly loud they were along with their complex rhythms that gave them a truly unique sound. "1430 Strut", "You Are Only What You Do", "To Be", "Blown", "7th Avenue", "Fingers", "Restless Deep Sea Blues", "How Are You?" and "When I Get Hone" rocked the joint to smithereens. Milk will be playing a homecoming show as part of The Rolling Volvelle Tour they've been embarking on for nearly all of May at The Sun Palace in Boston on the 30th, head on up 1-95 or take The T to see a band that's not for the lactose intolerant.

Burlapen

Not everyday do you see a band made up of such amazing musical talents when the likes of singer-songwriter Rachel Jorgensen, former Famous Winters and current Vudu Sister drummer along with the personification of Divey in Alex Garzone, former Famous Winters guitarist, vocalist and lyricist Sean Kennedy, violinist Diane O'Connor and multi-instrumentalist Michael Samos perform together, but it happened and Burlapen was born on stage. A lot of twang coming from Samos' slide guitar, the elegance of O'Connor's violin and Jorgensen's wonderfully heartfelt voice really stuck out to me, I was hooked right from the first strum. "Only Fear", "Waves", "Harder" and "Pretty Gun" were part of a set that encompassed a lot of blues, old-school style country and sheer emotion. Burlapen will be playing next at Local 121 in Providence on June 21st with local rock & rollers Smith & Weeden. Check out one of the hottest new bands in Rhode Island for a time that you should immediately mark down on your calendar.
