Mom Can-Do’s: Petting Zoos + Early Autumn Fun
Tuesday, September 10, 2013
Moms Can-Do's is a GoLocal weekly feature for moms of little ones--from toddlers to elementary schoolers. Looking for fun things to do during the week? Creative spots for last-minute outings? Fun events especially for little ones? We'll bring you our 5 favorites in the region every Tuesday, and they're all within an hour's drive of home.
Check out some early Autumn fun!
Take your kids to see, pet and frolic with our little, furry friends in the animal kingdom. New England is famous for a multitude of petting zoos that allow kids and adults alike to get up close to feed and play around with goats, sheep, donkeys, and so many more sociable (and safe) farm animals. Go here to check out a comprehensive list of great petting zoos in the southern New England area. Great locations include Southwick's Zoo, Chepachet Farms, Simmons Farm, and Davis Farmland, just to name a few.
Apple picking is a fun activity that gets you and your children active and out of the house at the same time. New England is famous for its apples and the best season for picking has just begun. There are over twenty orchards in Central Mass alone. Many of these establishments have more than apples, with great farm stores with tasty and healthy local produce that your kids will surely love. Check out a list of great options for here. For Rhode Island, check out a good list of locations in Rhode Island here.
Art in the Park!
There is still time to visit Art in the Park at Elm Park in Worcester. Have a picnic and play with your kids in the park (frisbee, catch, etc.) and then check out some of the great artistic installations that now surround the park created by talented artists throughout New England. Your kids (and you hopefully) will leave in awe at the extraordinary local talent displayed.
Providence has a children's museum with active, educational and interesting hands-on fun for kids and their parents. Build fountains, boats, magnetic mazes, and figures of all shapes and sizes. Learn about water and all its features in cool, fun ways. Also, explore a garden of native plants, explore a two story climbing maze and tree house, bring marionettes to life, and so much more.
There is still time to visit the educational and exciting DinoTracks exhibit at the EcoTarium in Worcester and, as a bonus, in September you can even get into the museum for half-price! Step into dinosaur footprints, hear and feel their footsteps, and come face-to-face with some of the dinosaurs who made them. DinoTracks starts where scientists first began studying dinosaurs (at their feet). Focusing on fossil discoveries, the exhibit engages visitors of all ages in trying out hands-on scientific study methods and getting down on the ground to put their new skills to work.
