Just because Labor Day is upon us, it doesn't mean you can't stop having fun outside at night. Each Thursday evening at dusk on the corner of Westminster and Union Street, DownCity hosts a free screening of cult classics, crowd-pleasers, and blockbusters, at Providence’s only outdoor movie screen. Below is a synopsis of the movies for September, along with ideas about who to ask as your date, taglines, and a theme-oriented suggestion for a before or after activity.

Classic Vampire Movie

The Lost Boys – September 1

Synopsis: Joel Schumacher’s 1987 film combines teen comedy and horror with a pitch perfect tone of hilarity, about two brothers in California who fight a gang of teenage vampires. Starring a young Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, and “the Coreys”—Haim and Feldman. For an 1980s take on the teen-vampire-combo phenomenon, this one is armed with an ironic twist.

Whom to bring: Anyone with a satirical knowledgeable about Twilight.

Romantic Thrills

Notorious – September 8

Synopsis: Hitchcock’s 1946 thriller stars what might be the best-looking couple to grace the big screen: Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. Grant and Bergman as well as the stellar Claude Rains’ lives become entangled during an espionage operation and romantic intrigue.

Tagline: Notorious Woman of many Desires! Fateful Fascination! Bold Intrigue!

Whom to bring: A romantic date with whom you have a tangled history.

Before the movie:  Take your date to some classic cocktails at the antique bar at Local 121, 121 Washington Street, 274-2121.  

Dancing Shoes

Saturday Night Fever – September 15

Synopsis:  Tony Manero (John Travolta) is a good Italian son from the other side of Brooklyn in the 1970s. He exudes his anti-working class ambitions with his posse of boys at the disco for an interesting confrontation between masculinity and dancing. The iconic Bee Gees soundtrack perfectly matches the polyester duds and the male entry into platform shoes. 

Tagline: Where do you go when the record is over…

Whom to bring: The best dancers you know, particularly the ones from the other side of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.

After the movie: Head to Ultra close by for a chance to show off the corniest moves you can muster. 172 Pine Street, 454-5483 

Stoned silliness

Pineapple Express – September 22

Synopsis: A bored court-process clerk (Seth Rogan) only visits his aggressively bizarre drug-dealer (James Franco) to pursue a particular strain of marijuana called Pineapple Express. When Rogan’s character witnesses a cop murder a dangerous drug lord, Rogan and Franco team up as a bromantic duo. Watch as silly stoner paranoia gives way hilarious attempts to escape the pursuits of crooked cops.

Tagline: One hit could ruin your whole day.

Whom to bring: Your favorite buddy.

Prince of the city

Purple Rain – September 29

Synopsis: Starring the Artist Formally Know as Prince, actually known as Prince at this point, this 1984 cult classic is a musical film about a young, talented musician, “the Kid,” who comes from an abusive home life in Minneapolis and begins an untidy relationship with Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero). The film was the last movie to win an Academy Award for the Best Original Song Score, from a soundtrack that sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

Tagline: Prince in His First Motion Picture.

Whom to bring: 80s music fans.

Before the movie: Try your hand at karaoke to some Prince standards at Ladder 133 Bar & Grill at 133 Douglas Ave, 272-7427.
