James Clayton Sattel, GoLocalProv Contributor
Photographer James Clayton Sattel is passionate about Rhode Island, particularly those shores, crags, and vistas of his home island: Aquidneck. GoLocalProv is delighted to be collaborating with Jim this summer on curated sets of his images that capture coastal life so vividly.
This week, Jim turns his lens to a subject not always associated with Newport—horses. "Patience is the name of the game when photographing horses," Jim says. "Eighty percent of the time, horses are grazing, and lack of patience can result in a group of horses all with their heads down—no action, no eye contact, nothing to relate to." Jim says that when he photographs horses, "I like to get shots that create a feeling of freedom, the innocence of the horse, and its seemingly limitless energy." Picturesque pasture scenes are great, he says, "especially when there's interesting architecture. Using the pasture and barn structures can create a compelling photo."

Polo on the Beach
Thundering hooves and crashing waves... it's scene right out of a film, but it happens right here on Aquidneck Island! Polo on the beach is a favorite of the Newport Winter Festival, and here they are, on Easton's (First Beach), going for it!

Family Time
I loved this image at Glen Farm, in Portsmouth, of Mom & Dad taking a private moment while their offspring watches in the background. Not so far from human life!

Black Beauty
There's a specific romance around a black horse, no doubt fueled by the immensely popular book and film, Black Beauty. Here's the real thing, a gorgeous Friesian horse, at Glen Farm.

Historic Settings
There are few more beautiful places to visit (and photograph!) horses than at Glen Farm. I love the stonework, the architectural shapes, and how beautifully they frame the horses and their caretakers.

Breaking Into Gallop
This is Oliver, who lives at Glen Farm in Portsmouth. I love this shot of him breaking into gallop as he moves along a historic stone wall. This horse is an absolute joy to watch.

Another Season
Here's Oliver again at Glen Farm, but in entirely different seasonal circumstances. Blanketed and out for some activity in a fresh snow, he looks every bit as joyous as he breaks loose.

Portrait in Winter
Another Glen Farm horse is bundled up on a snowy day. There's something really special when a horse looks directly at you, as in this portrait. This is why we sit patiently with our cameras, waiting for the right moment.

Holiday Greetings
This snowy scene at Glen Farm feels like the perfect holiday card to me. The barn and adjacent structures sit shrouded by snow and muted in the snowy air, while there's that beautiful accent of green at the horse's feet. Who says that weather should keep you from shooting photographs?

Back to the Beach
It's everyone's romantic dream, to ride along a peaceful shore, and here in Rhode Island, that's a reality. From the colorful frenzy of polo on First Beach to this solitary pair of horse and rider on Sachuest Beach, this is pure Aquidneck.
