Ironman Hits Rhode Island

Saturday, July 10, 2010

If a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run sound like your idea of a fun Sunday, then you'll be glad to know that there are still spots available at this weekend's Amica Ironman 70.3 (the triathlon, not the super-hero).

But if for some strange reason pushing your body to the edge of its physical limits isn't your style, you can still come out to see these endurance athletes race from one end of Rhode Island, essentially, to the other.

The third annual Rhode Island Ironman 70.3, the race starts with the swim in the waters off Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narrangansett followed by the 56-mile bike ride through Exeter, West Greenwich, Coventry, North Scituate, Johnston and Providence, ending with a 13.1-mile running course that loops twice through Providence's historic East Side, Blackstone Boulevard, Brown University campus, the downtown financial district and finishes at the forefront of the State Capitol Building. The winner in 2009, Michael Lovato, finshed this grueling race in only 3:54:39 (they cut racers off after 8:30:00).

If you'd like to watch the swim, it kicks off at 6am; if finishes are more your speed, expect the strongest of the Ironmen (and women) to cross the line at the Statehouse around 10am. If you'd like to see the start and finish, there are shuttles available for $8 that leave at 4am from downtown Providence to the swim venue and will return by 9:30am for the finish. If you're only hoping to catch a glimpse of the competitors, your best bet is at the finish line in front of the Statehouse building and Providence Place Mall. But you can also see the anywhere throughout the course, which you can check out online.

Do you know someone in the race?  Here's a list of all the competitors from RI:
