Only in Rhode Island would a body of water get its own day.

But what a day it is. Governor Lincoln D. Chafee has announced all the fun and festivities coming up this weekend for Rhode Island's annual Governor’s Bay Day celebration to take place Sunday, July 31, 2011 at locations around the state. All events are free and designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages; transportation to South County beaches will be provided at no cost by the RIPTA Beach Bus Express, and parking at all State Beaches will be free.

“As Rhode Islanders, we are fortunate to live among the natural beauty of our state’s beaches and parks,” Governor Chafee said. “Bay Day is a terrific opportunity to get out and spend time with family and friends in some of these unique and special settings. Whether you head inland to a quiet woodland park, or down to the ocean for swimming or boating, there will be plenty of enjoyable activities for all Rhode Islanders.”

Highlights of Bay Day festivities include complimentary sailing trips at India Point Park, courtesy of the Community Boating Center; the RI Great Outdoor Pursuit sponsored by the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) at Colt State Park; neighborhood barbeques and cookouts; a bike safety program hosted by the Department of Transportation (DOT) at Scarborough Beach; a kite flying demonstration at Breton Point; and a sand sculpture contest at Roger Wheeler Beach.
