Getting out in the sand is the perfect kido summer activity. And we've got lots and lots of sand available.

One of the joys of living in Rhode Island is that real explorations are a short drive away... perfect for kidos. Here's how to take advantage of our bounty.

Sandcastle building

It's summer. And making sand castles is one of our favorite activities at the beach. The design of our sand structures usually depends on the beach, tide, seaweed or sand consistency. We keep our car stocked with buckets and shovels and usually walk the beach to find seeweed and shells. Find a list of Rhode Island Beaches, here.

Make up your own holiday

With July Fourth behind us, it's a long stretch 'til the next official holiday. Why not make up your own ones this summer? A few years ago, Elyse Major made up the holiday, Brother's Day as a way to minimize conflict and honor the strong bond between siblings. Her family now celebrates it every year in July.  Her family plans a special activity or adventure and shares a poem to mark the occasion. Try making up your own holiday. Elyse offers great ideas on how to celebrate:  Make cards, Engage in tried-and-true activities that your children enjoy such as watching a favorite movie or playing a favorite game, Do something brand-new together as a family like visiting a new-to-you attraction, Get silly together with a family dance party or a game of charades, Enjoy a special treat like cupcakes or make-your-own ice cream sundaes, or watch family movies (chances are you recorded them but haven’t watched them either).
