Drop-Offs for Operation Holiday Cheer This Weekend
Saturday, November 12, 2011
'Tis the season to be giving, and what better place to start than with RI's men and women serving overseas?
The Office of Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts and partners in the RI National Guard, accompanied by dozens of volunteers from around the state, will receive donations for the 9th Annual Operation Holiday Cheer drive this Saturday, November 12th from 9am until 1pm at the RI National Guard Armory of Mounted Commands, 1051 North Main Street in Providence. Corporate and community sponsors as well as the general public have already made or pledged thousands of dollars in donations and wish list items. More is expected to arrive on Saturday.
Generosity and commitment
"Every year I am truly awestruck by the enormous outpouring of community support to bring Operation Holiday Cheer to our troops abroad," said Lt. Governor Roberts. "The generosity and commitment of our community and our sponsors to the troops is overwhelming," Roberts said.
The Lieutenant Governor's Office has led the appeal for support from the public in a month-long drive for donations of goods and approximately $14,000 in funds to pay for postage to ship the packages.
How to donate
Volunteers are organized by the state family support program of the RI National Guard and the American Red Cross RI chapter. Anyone can make a donation of any size or amount and bring it to the Armory on Saturday. The troops' official wish list can be found on the Lt. Governor's Web site here or by contacting the office for more info at 222-2371.
On Saturday, November 19th, volunteers will assemble at the North Main Street Armory from 9 am to 1 pm to pack the boxes and prepare them for shipping.
