There should be a sign: Last Chance Clambake.

The final RI clambake of the season open to the public is coming up in Newport, and it's for a great cause. Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation will be pulling out all the (shellfish) stops on Saturday, August 21, for its 27th Annual Clambake. The event promises not only a fantastic spread of classic RI clambake fare, but it's being run (like the lighthouse itself) with a very environmentally-conscious approach.

The feed includes New England clam chowder, steamers, mussels, Portuguese and Italian sausages, red and sweet potatoes, just-picked corn on the cob and seasoned fish, plus chilled watermelon and homemade blueberry cake. A cash bar includes wine, beer, and non-alcoholic choices. (For $15 extra, you can add a lobster to it all.)

The green angle

As for the green aspect, paper and corn cobs will go straight to the evening's bonfire, shells back into the sea, other organic materials into the compost pile. Meat scraps are either fed to the gulls or they'll go into lobster traps as bait. If all goes according to plan, Rose Island planners estimate they will feed 150 people and generate less than a five-gallen bucket of landfillable trash.

Want to be one of the lucky 150? Tickets are $75 for adults, $25 for kids 6-12 (5 and under are free). Lobster adds $15 to any ticket price. Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation members get a discount. Proceeds benefit the Foundation, which maintains the historic lighthouse just below the Newport Bridge.

Ticket includes clambake, games, tours and round trip boat to Rose Island. Join now for member discount. No ticket refunds. Limited to 150 people. RILF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. A portion of your payment that exceeds the fair market value of your clambake is deductible as a charitable contribution.
