Don’t Miss: CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival
Thursday, August 05, 2010
It’s a well-known fact: summer weekends are always hot in Newport. But this weekend is a truly hot highlight – the CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival. From Friday to Sunday, world-renowned artists and up-and-coming performers from around the globe will be delighting audiences in one of Rhode Island’s most beautiful settings. GoLocalProv caught up with John Phillips, Senior Producer of the Festival, about the highlights of this year’s festival.
Among the jazz giants, Phillips pointed out Ahmad Jamal, Herbie Hancock, and Wynton Marsalis as performers who can’t be missed. In addition, he highlighted JD Allen and Mark Turner. “Each of them have fantastic, young saxophone trios,” said Phillips. “Really great players and really contemporary.”
For a big-band sound, Phillips recommended Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and Darcy Jame’s Argue’s band the Secret Society.
He also highlighted Amina Figarova, a Dutch singer and pianist. “Figarova is a really incredible performer from Holland,” Phillips said, “and Newport audiences have never seen her before.”
And for someone fresh and new, Phillips immediately raved about Jamie Cullum, a “fantastic young jazz pianist and singer with healthy dose of pop and really catchy tunes,” said Phillips, “He’s really great.”
