Scathing wit arrives in Newport on July 14 when Dennis Miller takes the stage at the Newport Summer Comedy Series.

Get ready to laugh.

Five-time Emmy Award winner Dennis Miller is bringing his razor-sharp wit, wisdom and humor to the Newport waterfront this Saturday, July 14th, at the Mattie Volkswagen Audi Newport Summer Comedy Series at the Newport Yachting Center.

Two comedy icons

“We are thrilled to have two comedy icons and terrific talents like Joan Rivers and Dennis Miller with us on back-to-back Saturdays in July," said Joe Rocco, comedy series president. Rivers appeared in Newport last weekend.  "What a way to get our 12th annual series underway."

Miller, who currently hosts a daily three-hour self-titled talk radio program, nationally syndicated by Dial Global, is a regular contributor on Fox News Channel’s The O’Reilly Factor. He joked recently with WHJJ radio host Helen Glover about invading the liberal shores of both Rhode Island and Massachusetts on this leg of his summer tour.

"To make peace with the locals, I'll make a donation to (MA senate challenger) Elizabeth Warren's campaign," Miller said. "But you know what, I'm going to make it in beads," he cracked, taking aim at Warren's well-publicized comments about having Native American heritage.

Miller, who famously lampooned then-president Ronald Reagan in the 1980s from his anchor chair on Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update, took on the current commander in chief. Barack Obama devotees "deify him, but they're usually atheists," he said. "He's a Christ figure for people who don't believe in God."

Dennis Miller

Miller is a five-time Emmy award winner for his critically acclaimed half-hour, live talk show Dennis Miller Live, which had a nine year run on HBO. He also wrote and starred in the Emmy-nominated cable comedy special, Raw Feed, his sixth such special. He was the host and executive producer of CNBC’s Dennis Miller, a topical interview talk show featuring "reasoned discourse, opinion and humor." Additionally, Miller has appeared on many politically oriented television talk shows.

In October 2001, HarperCollins published the fourth edition of Miller’s popular rants, The Rant Zone, now out in paperback. Miller’s previous books, I Rant Therefore I Am, Ranting Again and The Rants have all been New York Times best sellers. For two seasons, Miller called the plays alongside Al Michaels and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts on ABC’s Monday Night Football. He was also the Weekend Update correspondent on Saturday Night Live for six years, before exiting in 1991.

Over the years, Miller has become both a public and critical favorite. The New York Times said, “Mr. Miller is exquisitely attuned to contemporary foibles…his material can be scathing, his delivery low key…Mr. Miller reaches a bit farther than most comedians for the scorching comment…this smart aleck has an uncommonly sharp eye…” and The Hollywood Reporter called his most recent special, “an hour of topical, scathing brilliance that helps cement Miller’s status as the Lenny Bruce of the new millennium…the most cerebral, astute and clever standup ever to put mouth to microphone.”
