Highlander Charter School will have a new garden for hands-on learning thanks to students of the school and volunteers from CVS Caremark and Kimberly-Clark.

Highlander Charter School students, along with CVS Caremark Charity Classic supporters and Kimberly-Clark, are planting an educational community garden at the school. The new garden, boasting a wide variety of plants, will be used by the school’s more than 300 students to learn about ecology, planting, farm economics and more.

Highlander Charter School is an urban charter school for grades K-8 located in the heart of Providence. It offers all the benefits of a private school—small classes, diverse populations, individual attention from teachers—in a public school setting.

Volunteering in the community

CVS Caremark employees and employees at Kimberly-Clark, a supporter of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic, helped out with the gardening project—one of many ways that they like to pay it forward.

“Creating a garden that Highlander Charter School students will use as part of their studies is exciting,” said Scott Cowper, Director of Customer Development at Kimberly-Clark. “Giving back to the local community is an important part of the Kimberly-Clark culture, which is why we’re thrilled to partner with the CVS Caremark Charity Classic on this community service project.”

The CVS Caremark Charity Classic and its sponsors support a variety of charitable projects for local organizations. As Rhode Island’s largest charitable sporting event, the tournament has raised more than $15 million dollars for charities throughout New England. The annual golf tournament has supported dozens of charitable service projects and provided vital funding for a variety of regional organizations that focus on education, family and children’s issues.
