Comedian Bob Marley Coming to Newport

Thursday, August 02, 2012

What's so funny about New Englanders? A lot, if you listen to comedian Bob Marley.

What's so funny about New Englanders? A lot, if you spend any time with comedian Bob Marley.

Marley is returning to Rhode Island to appear at the Newport Summer Comedy Series on August 9, 2012. A veteran of appearing at the Comedy Connection as well as Foxwoods, Marley confesses his last time in Newport was when he attended a health conference there in college. "I partied the whole time," he says. "My mother was like, 'How was the conference?' 'It was wicked healthy,' I said."

Marley, who lives in Portland, Maine, says he's looking forward to a change of, well, culture. "Newport's great," he said, "but it's a little… different. I hate sailboats, but they are wicked pretty. I'm from Maine. I've got a wood splitter in my garage, but when I see a guy with boat shoes on, I say, 'Oh boy… .'"

The comedian loves to riff on the peculiarities of New Englanders, particularly his fellow Downeasters. "Everyone is on the same wavelength of miserable behavior," he says. "I say to people, come and stay for the 10 1/2 month winter!"

LA versus New England

Marley lived in Los Angeles for more than a decade, and finds the comparisons irresistible. "We had a party up on the lake and we lost power," he says. "Typical New England behavior, someone just said, 'Did the power go out?' I lived in California 11 years, and out there, if the power went out, everyone would freak out. Up in Maine, one guy always says, 'Go up to the second floor and see if we have power there.'"

Marley loves his New England roots, and he says that the audience on August 9 should be right with him. "That's what I love about New England," he says. "Everyone is on the same page. Everyone leaves one light on in the kitchen… at all times."

He pauses. "And it's the one above the stove."
