COLLEGE GUIDE: Best Places for Ribs

Wednesday, September 05, 2012

You'll feel like you've taken a roadtrip south of the Mason-Dixon Line when you hit any of these BBQ joints that feature juicy racks of ribs.

Good ribs can be hard to find in your college's cafeteria. We have a list of the best resturaunts around the state serving ribs that will make you feel like you have taken a trip down south.

LJ’s BBQ, Pawtucket

LJ’s has been serving their classic BBQ ribs from a strip mall in Pawtucket. Don’t get fooled by their location, the interior’s fun and makes you feel like you’ve taken a trip down south. Plus, these ribs, slow cooked on a customized barbecue pit, are delicious. LJ’s can even deliver through “restaurants to go.” 727 East Ave, Pawtucket. 401-305-5255. www.ljsbbq.com

Wes' Rib House, Providence

The Missouri-style BBQ, but RI classic, will drag you off the beaten path to Olneyville. Don't forget to complete your meal with a delicious bowl of chili, corn bread or a loaded baked potato. 38 Dike St, Providence. 401-421-9090. www.wesribhouse.com

Rick’s Road House, Providence

Eating at Rick’s Road House will make you feel like you’re traveling down Route 66, stopping at family-run restaurants. From the ribs, slow smoked over hickory and applewood, to the “make-your-own-s’mores,” Rick’s does a good job at make you feel like you’re eating a home-cooked meal. Plus, there's an enormous wall-sized TV to catch all the action on game days (and nights). 370 Richmond Street, Providence. 401-272-7675. www.ricksroadhouseri.com

Oak Hill Tavern House of Bar-B-Que, North Kingstown (good for URI students)

Stop by the Oak Hill Tavern House for the 10-hour smoked ribs that will fall off the bone. And every Wednesday, chicken wings and mini corn dogs are 25¢ each all day long. There are also different specialty deals every day, so keep an eye on their schedule. 565 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown. 401-294-3282. www.oakhilltavern.com

W.B. Cody’s, Westerly (good for URI students)

W.B. Cody’s is a must-stop ribs joint for South County students. From Cody’s own, to Kansas City Sweet to Texas Hot, there’s plenty of flavors of sauces to choose from. And if you’re too intimidated by the menu, why not try it all? The Wild West BBQ Sampler has ¼ rack of ribs, ¼ BBQ chicken and 2 Burnt Endz all for only $14.99. 265 Post Rd, Westerly. 322-4070. www.wbcodys.com

Becky’s BBQ, Middletown (good for Salve & RWU students)

Becky’s BBQ has two signature sauces—a sweet Kansas City and a Carolina will a bit of vinegar. And even with the restaurant located in an old, New England-style colonial house, you'll feel miles below the Mason-Dixon line as soon as you smell the BBQ. 82 East Main Rd, Middletown. 401-841-9909. beckysbbq.com
