College Crusade RI Launches Summer Programs

With summer right on the doorstep for public school students, the College Crusade of Rhode Island announced the start of its 2011 summer programs. Aiming to keep teens from the state’s low-income urban communities engaged and learning in the non-school season, College Crusade will offer programs in academics plus career exploration workshops, adventure education, leadership seminars, writing workshops, and campus residencies.
The College Crusade of Rhode Island, the state's leading college-readiness and scholarship program for middle school and high school students in low-income urban school districts, serves approximately 3,500 RI students per year and rewards their efforts and achievements with up to four years of college scholarships.
Programs available to Crusaders this summer are:

Susan and Jack Rudin Leadership Conference – June 10-12 and June 17-19
A three-day residential program for high school girls. Provides an opportunity for young women from across the country to come together to learn and practice a new model of leadership and to cultivate their capacities for exercising leadership. Held at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA.
SPIRIT Summer Program – June 29 to August 2
A six-week program for middle school and high school students that develops writing and communication skills using projects based on the study of a central theme in the wider community. Held weekdays on the campuses of Wheeler School, Lincoln School, and Moses Brown School in Providence, and at Blackstone Academy in Pawtucket.
Johnson & Wales University Career Explorations 2011 – June through July
A series of three-day residential weekend programs for high school students entering their junior or senior year. Participants explore what it is like to work in business, culinary arts, hospitality, or technology careers. Held at Johnson & Wales University in Providence.
Wheeler Summer Camp – July 5-25
A three-week program for middle school students that provides an integrated hands-on curriculum with a focus on reading, writing, and math. Features a special unit in forensic science. Held weekdays at Wheeler School in Providence and Wheeler Farm in Seekonk, MA.
Brown Summer High School – July 5-27
A four-week innovative learning environment where high school students work in small groups, participate in discussions, conduct laboratory experiments, and engage in numerous hands-on activities. Develops essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking. Held weekday mornings at Brown University in Providence.
CAAP (Crusade Adventure and Academic Program) – July 5 to August 12
A program in adventure education for middle school students that improves self-esteem and develops skills in problem solving, team building, and healthy risk taking. Includes a literacy component. Held at Roger Williams Middle School in Providence in two-week sessions through July and August.
Ways to A’s – July 5 to August 12
For students who are applying to join The College Crusade. A specially designed curriculum that introduces students entering grade 6 to the academic, social, and personal challenges of middle school. Includes exercises in preparing to study, reading for success, report writing, and test taking. The program instructors are College Crusade alumni who are in college or have just graduated from college. Held in four-day intensives at the Community College of Rhode Island, Providence campus.
Choices – July 11-15 and July 18-22
Weeklong interactive seminars that teach young people to recognize how the personal, educational, and financial decisions they make today can have lasting influences on what they are able to attain in the future. Includes workshops, group exercises, and teamwork experiences. Held weekdays at Brown University in Providence.
Media Literacy Writing Program – July 11-21 and July 25-Aug 4
A two-week writing program that teaches high school students how to analyze a broad spectrum of media messages, from music videos to MySpace. Participants will engage in critical thinking, writing, and discussion in a computer-interactive environment. Held in two sessions at The College Crusade office in Providence.
University of Rhode Island Summer Academies – Throughout July
Weeklong academies in Green Design, Business, Engineering, and Construction for high school students. Topics explored include sustainable development, landscape architecture, supply chain management, highway and bridge design, water resources, environmental engineering, and geotechnical engineering. Hosted by the University of Rhode Island Transportation Center.
Bridge to Success Summer Institute – July 25 to August 5
A ten-day residential program on the Roger Williams University campus in Bristol for juniors and seniors. The program focuses on SAT preparation and includes college-readiness workshops, outdoor activities, and field trips.
Crusade Summer Experience – August 1-19
A series of weeklong leadership programs for high school Crusaders during which participants develop skills in public speaking, team building, project planning, and facilitation. Held weekdays at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston campus.
