CNN Picks Goosewing Beach As Most Eco-Friendly Beach

Monday, July 19, 2010

CNN recently listed its picks for the most eco-friendly beaches around the world. Eight beaches were chosen for having not only spectacular shorelines but were on protected land with conservation in mind. Beaches in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Australia, Brazil and Rhode Island were on the list.

Rhode Island? That's right. Goosewing Beach Preserve in Little Compton was named in this gorgeous spot as one that works hard to protect endangered shorebirds. In fact, it's one of the few breeding sites for piping plover. Not to mention, it's just a beautiful place to make a fast getaway from the daily grind.

Goosewing Beach is owned by the Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island. Passionate about preserving the wildlife in this beautiful spot, they hire a Plover Warden and a beach Preserve Manager during nesting season (mid-April to early-September) to monitor and protect the species and to help educate beach-goers about the sensitive wildlife that inhabit the area. In February, the Nature Conservancy announced that a new education center at the Goosewing Beach Preserve was under construction. It is expected to be completed this summer.

Grab your suntan lotion, a pair of binoculars, a good bird guide and head to the tranquil Goosewing Beach this summer. Get directions to this eco-friendly hideaway by clicking on this map.
