Chanler Inn Named Top Cliffside Hotel in World by Departures Magazine

How about waking up to this panorama? This clifftop view caught the eye of Departures Magazine. Photo: Chanler Inn.

Newport's Chanler at Cliff Walk has scored yet another plum, this time landing among some of the world's most breathtaking properties as one of the 10 most Breathtaking Clifftop Hotels chosen by Departures Magazine.

The luxury inn that sits perched at the beginning of Newport's Cliff Walk and overlooks First Beach and the Atlantic Ocean was the only American hotel on the picturesque A-list.

Panoramic splendor

Departures points out the beauty--and irony--of the Cliff Walk. "The wealthy industrialists who populated Bellevue Avenue in Newport no doubt appreciated the sea breezes and views, but it was their vast employee base that really took in the panoramic splendor," says Departures' Adam McCulloch. "Staff members weren’t allowed on the main street, so the three-and-a-half-mile-long Cliff Walk (which backs the mansions) was developed as a servant path."

The Chanler, the only hotel on that "storied footpath" is a Civil War–era mansion built by former New York congressman John Winthrop Chanler. "Gourmet meals at the hotel’s Spiced Pear restaurant come with a side dish of attention-grabbing Atlantic Ocean vistas, while breakfast on the terrace offers a sweeping panorama of Easton’s Beach and a daily parade of runners soaking in the million-dollar views."

The Top 10

The Chanler shares worldwide cliff top props with the following international destinations:

Hotel Caruso Belvedere, Amalfi Coast
Aman Resort, Amankila, Bali,
Bulgari Resort, Uluwatu, Bali
Birkenhead House, Hermanus, South Africa
The Caves, Negril, Jamaica
Caesar Augustus, Capri
Jade Mountain, St. Lucia
Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa, Majorca, Spain
Villa Orsula, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Having lunch there in the late afternoon, on the deck, in the summertime, is a treat not to be missed - perfect for that business lunch, too....prices have come down since they opened....quite affordable to dine, probably not so to stay, but it's a start!
