NEWSWEEK’s branded education channel on the web has recently ranked Brown University #2 on their compilation of the nation’s 25 Most Diverse Schools. (The channel has previously ranked the university as the 10th Most Desirable School in the country, the 6th Most Desirable Urban School, and number 14 on the list of the Best Gay Friendly Schools. “And with 92% of its students coming from the top 10% of their high school class,” the site points out, “Brown is ranked No. 9 for brainiacs.”) Factors for this most recent distinction include Brown’s history as the first school in the nation to accept students regardless of their religious background. Today’s multi-ethnic student body, which includes16 percent of Asian heritage, 7 percent African-American and 8 percent Latino or Hispanic, was also a contributing factor to the #2 ranking. It also acknowledges that more than half of the student body is female. Because of these dynamics, Brown place second only to the University of Pennsylvania.
