“Borrow” Rhode Islanders at Providence Community Library’s Fundraiser

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Ever want to borrow someone, like you do a library book? Now's your chance, in this innovative fundraiser for the Providence Community Library

Yes, you can check out a "living book" at PCL! Modeled on the newest concept in library services—borrowing people with your library card—the raffle at The Great Checkout will allow library supporters to "check out" real life experiences with well-known Rhode Island entertainers, scientists, elected officials, historians, artists, and other fascinating people. It's an easy and fun way to learn—with a Living Book.

Meet the "living book" raffle prizes

The following are available for bid already on the PCL site, here:

Smell the bread rising at Seven Stars Bakery and get tips on baking from Master Baker and owner Jim Williams.

Learn what it is to be mayor of Providence first-hand and up close from Mayor Angel Taveras in a half-hour private meeting in the mayor’s office.

Peer into the starry skies with Prof. David Targan, Director of Brown University’s Ladd Observatory and Associate Dean for Science Education at the Observatory on Doyle Ave. (up to four people – unless your family is bigger!)

Donate a concert for you, your friends, and the public by two-time Grammy Award-winning artist and recipient of a RI Council for the Humanities Lifetime Achievement Award Bill Harley to the PCL Library of your choice.

Share a one-on-one political analysis over coffee with retired Providence Journal political columnist M. Charles Bakst.

Enjoy a private tour of the Providence Harbor as you cruise up and down the Providence River with the Providence Police Harbor Patrol.

Climb your family tree on a 2-hour private genealogy instruction and tour with Phoebe Bean, Librarian at the R.I. Historical Society.

Explore the architectural history of downtown Providence on your private walking tour with architect and RISD professor Jim Barnes (up to 5 people)

Take a private tour of the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University with Deputy Director and Librarian Margot Nishimura and enjoy a special up close view of some of its most significant Early American treasures (bring a guest).

Explore McCoy Stadium on a private behind the scenes tour and enjoy a PawSox game from your box seats (up to four people).

Peek into drawers and cupboards in a private behind the scenes tour of the RISD Museum with Director John W. Smith and view treasures not on display.

Take your kids and apples to meet the horses of the Providence Police Mounted Command on a private tour of their Roger Williams Park stable.

Attend a meeting with Rosanna Ortiz Sinel and a local fashion designer, then enjoy your front row seat this fall at that designer's StyleWeek Northeast runway show.

Learn about (and taste) a selection of rums with The Dorrance's Vito Lantz while learning about Rhode Island's major role in the history of the rum industry.

The details
