Block Island’s Town Beach Best in US—Coastal Living Magazine

Monday, July 16, 2012

The friendly beauty of Block Island's Fred Benson Town Beach has caught the notice of Coastal Living, which has named it one of the Best Beaches in the US for 2012. Photo: WalkingGeek/flickr.

One of Block Island's beaches has been named one of the 21 Best Beaches in the US, according to Coastal Living Magazine

No one knows beaches better than the editors of the popular magazine, which celebrates all things coastal. And those editors have named Fred Benson Town Beach among the very best in the country.

Block Island: "Barefoot or bicycles"

"Barefoot or bicycles is the vibe of this tiny (11-square-mile) island off the southern New England coast," writes Joe Yogerst of Coastal Living. "Long, lean, and pewter-colored, Fred Benson Town Beach rides a sandy isthmus between Great Salt Pond and the open Atlantic."

An easy walk from the Block Island Ferry dock, this popular beach has something for everyone, from convenient bath houses for cleaning up toddlers to an ample snack bar, and lots and lots of beach for everyone from tentative waders to boogie boarders and hard-core ocean swimmers. Named for one of the island's most beloved citizens, Fred Benson, the island's only town beach is also a community center for concerts, yoga classes, and much more.

Coastal Living also recommended a lodging for each beach--for Block Island, Yogerst gave the nod to the 1661 Inn & Hotel Manisses.

New England's finest

Block Island's beloved town beach was one of only 3 New England beaches honored by Coastal Living. Sand Beach, on Mt. Desert Island, ME, possesses a "tranquil bay" and is "one of the few places in Acadia National Park that lends itself to safe swimming." Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro, MA, on Cape Cod, is "ideal for romantic picnics, long walks, and adventurous over-sand driving," writes Yogerst.

The only states to have more than that one beach honored in 2012 were California, Florida, Hawaii, and North Carolina. For the entire list of this year's Best Beaches, go here.
