Picture it: a theater full of giddy women, sipping Skinnygirl margaritas, eager to hear from the Skinnygirl herself: Bethenny Frankel. I was lucky enough to attend Bethenny’s “Skinnygirls Night Out” at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium on Saturday and it was, in a word: inspiring.

Trend

Bethenny, who got her start as a not-so-housewife and natural foods chef on Bravo TV’s Real Housewives of New York City and has since launched her own spinoff show “Bethenny Getting Married?” and “Bethenny Ever After” as well as a career cooking, writing, speaking and gaining millions of fans who hang on her every word.

Tell

At the event, Bethenny discussed Naturally Thin: Unleash Your Skinnygirl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting and “A Place of Yes: 10 Rules for Getting Everything You Want out of Life”, her two bestselling books as well as her past, present and future.

If you’ve watched the Bravo shows, you know Bethenny is straightforward, comical, gregarious and tends to throw in a curse now and again. But what you see is what you get: she’s real, she’s honest and she does not sugarcoat the truth or her life. Coming from a childhood fraught with alcoholism and abuse, Bethenny shared her struggles and her successes.

Truth

After years of beating herself up over trying to be thin, she finally broke free from dieting and learned to separate emotion from food. Like so many of us, Bethenny shares her journey and all of the speedbumps along the way when it comes to marriage and sex (her husband Jason Hoppy took her jibing in stride), motherhood (daughter Brynn is 9 months old) and career (finding balance is a daily task). “Motherhood is the hardest thing ever,” she said, which is refreshing from a woman who can afford the best baby nurses and nannies and does not make it seem effortless.

Tips

Advice ranged from “don’t aim to be the hottest girl in the room, aim to be the most interesting” and “if you are in a relationship and it doesn’t feel right, it’s not and you need to figure out what you want.” The main idea was empowerment and believing in your dreams: not in a butterfly-filled fantasy world, but right here, in our world, our reality.

Bethenny welcomed questions from the audience and it was comical, emotional and inspirational all at once. We heard from Brown University senior Sarah Engle, who was wearing the same Christian Louboutins as Bethenny. Sarah, born and bred in Providence, is moving to New York City to work in fashion once she graduates and asked Bethenny for advice. Her answer was perfect: to explore, take it all in and enjoy every second.
