Newport National (324 Mitchell’s Lane, Middletown, shown right) is the most expensive public course in the state, but it's worth the price ($45-100 for RI residents). Designed by the famous golf architect Arthur Hills, it became home to the first US Open in 1895. This links course has a Scottish feel and is kept at pristine conditions from tee-to-green with spectaclar views of the Narragansett Bay and Atlantic Ocean. You can book tee times online here or by phone 848-9690.

Triggs Memorial Golf Course (1533 Chalkstone Ave, Providence) was designed and built by legendary golf architect Donald Ross in the heart of Providence in 1932 (it was heavily restored in the '90s). Its classic layout includes 18 great holes with superb fairways and greens. The general rates are only $40 for 18 (walking), but they are currently offering some Summer Specials, like $45 for 18 with a cart on weekends (after 2pm). To book tee times call 521-8460 or 521-8462.

Montaup Country Club (500 Anthony Rd, Portsmouth) is a beautifully manicured semi-private club (meaning only some hours - 11-3 weekdays and after 1:30pm weekends - are public) with scenic views of Mount Hope Bridge and the Bay (best seen from the 16th hole). Be ready for a challenge because Montaup's first three holes are regarded as one of the toughest openers in the area. Summer Green Fees are $47 (walking) and $37 after 4pm. To book tee times call 683-0955 (three days in advance recommended).

Meadow Brook
(163 Kingstown Rd, Richmond) is RI's newest and longest course, located only 30 minutes from Providence. It's very well kept and its large bent grass greens give it a classic New England feel in a picturesque setting. Rates vary from weekday twilight rates of $30 to weekend to weekend rates of $60. To book tee times call 539-8491.

Richmond Country Club (74 Sandy Pond Rd, Richmond) may sound like it's private, but it's fully public and a great change of pace from your typical New England course. It is a shorter course, carved out of tall pines giving it a relaxing Carolina feel (above). And the best part is you can play the course for only $20 weekdays after 3pm (Otherwise, $35 weekdays and $40 weekends). To book tee times call 364-9292.
