From beaches to drive ins to grassy lawns, there's a movie and a setting for any occasion. Have a big date? Just looking to hand out with some friends? Is it high-time for a family night? NewportFILM is provides fresh narratives and documentaries with their outdoor series, while across the state there are several more opportunities to enjoy a film under the stars.

NewportFILM Outdoors

From the lawn of Middletown’s St. George’s school to the grass courts of Newport’s International Tennis Hall of Fame, NewportFilm brings a creative outlook for the outdoor movie scenes. Since its start in 2010, this nonprofit has been screening independent documentaries and other creative film projects to the Ocean State. This year, the festival has another engaging and interesting film lineup at different venues. Here is the NewportFILM Outdoors Summer 2013 schedule!

Wuskenau Beach Drive-Ins

Wuskenau Town Beach Thursday Night Drive-Ins, Westerly

The Misquamicut Business Association in Westerly offers a Drive-in movie night every Thursday at the Wuskenau Town Beach. Movies start at 9 pm and are shown next to the waterslides on 318 Atlantic Avenue. Admission is $10 per car and don’t forget to tune your radio to 1620 AM for sound. The summer film season started with Jaws on July 11 and has following movies scheduled until August:

July 25: Grease
August 1: Footloose
August 8: The Natural
August 15: St. Elmo’s Fire
August 22: Blue Lagoon
August 29: American Grafitti

Rustic Tri Vue Drive-In

North Smithfield

This authentic 1950’s drive-in screens outdoor movies every night until the month of September. With three screens playing two first run feature films, the movie venue also offers full concessions stands featuring famous Clam Cakes. The first set of films on each screen start at dusk around 8:45-9 pm. Admission is $25 per carload with additional chargers for campers, RV’s and vehicle over 18’. Sound is provided by the AM and FM radio of the car stereo. Box office accepts credit cards but the snack bars only take cash. For a detailed list of movies on each day, click here.

Movies on The Beach

Narragansett

End a beach day with an outdoor movie night at Narragansett Beach’s free summer film series. On select Wednesdays at dusk (around 8:15-8:45 pm), movies will be screened in July and August for an on shore film experience. Grab an on-the-go dinner from various food trucks as well. Featured films include:

August 7: Star Trek
August 14: Bee Movie
August 21: Jaws

Brown U. Movie Series

Brown University Outdoor Movie Series, Providence

It’s an outdoor movie venue for the College Hill community! Back for its 3rd year, the Brown University Outdoor Summer Movie Series take place on select Tuesday evenings at sundown at the outdoor amphitheater at the Granoff Center for the Creative Arts located on 154 Angell Street. Popcorn is provided for the event and all you need is a blanket! The date and time of the remaining screenings are:

Newport’s first “Green Drive-In” is back again with its August free outdoor movie series at the Quarry Meadow of Ballard Park. Parking is available at the Rogers High School parking lot, which is a 15 min walk from the Quarry Meadow. Films begin at dusk and make sure to bring a blanket and snacks!
