Art League of Rhode Island Opens 10th Anniversary Show

Thursday, June 17, 2010

There's no mistaking the theme.

The Art League of Rhode Island's 10th Anniversary Exhibit, The Art of Excellence, opens tonight (on Gallery Night) at the RISD Museum, and features professional artists who represent 26 of the 39 cities in Rhode Island. This year, The Art of Excellence includes current artworks of more than 80 artists, including Rhode Island notables James Baker, Gretchen Dow Simpson, Howard Newman, and Professor Tom Sgouros (who will give a talk as part of the exhibit July 15 at 6:30pm), whose "Remembered Landscape" (oil on linen) is shown here.

THE ALRI has never had a home base; rather, its exhibitions have occurred at a variety of venues throughout the state, including the Bristol Art Museum, followed by the Newport Art Museum, Attleboro Arts Museum, Providence Art Club, and the Virginia Lynch Gallery.

The Art League of Rhode Island (ALRI) was formed based on a shared vision to encourage and foster artistic recognition and growth among Rhode Island Artists. ALRI was incorporated with a goal to contribute, encourage and promote integrity and excellence in the arts in Rhode Island. The Art League of Rhode Island numbers among its founding members some of Rhode Island's most prominent artists working in a wide range of medium from painting to furniture making. Featured, left, is More Cycles, watercolor by Joan Thompson Boghossian.

Opening reception Thursday, June 17, 5-9pm, at the RISD Museum, 224 Benefit St, Providence. The Art of Excellence runs through July 25. For more information, go here.
