America’s Cup World Series 2012 Preview

The America's Cup World Series Season Final officially hits Newport starting today, as nine crews from seven countries prepare to compete on the waters off Newport. Look for Artemis Racing (Sweden), China Team, Emirates Team New Zealand, Energy Team (France), two boats from Luna Rossa Challenge (Italy), two boats from Oracle Team USA and Team Korea.

Whether you are a sailing fan or not, there are all kinds of ways to partake in the fun. Here's a guide to all the public events.

Tips for visitors: Remember to bring your own blanket or low-backed chair. Coolers, alcohol, pets and umbrellas are not allowed at the America's Cup Village at Fort Adams.

NON-RACE DAYS: 6/23-6/27

Getting there and being there

Parking: Parking will be $10 from Saturday, June 22, to Wednesday, June 27. From Thursday, June 28, to Monday, July 1, parking will be $20.

Arriving by car: Newport police will direct traffic to remote parking lots, once off the bridge and into city designated parking locations. Lots will be $20. Shuttle services will be available from remote lots during official race days (June 28 to July 1) only. Shuttles will drop passengers off in downtown Newport near water shuttle service sites. There will be no land shuttle to Fort Adams.

Arriving by water: Water shuttle service will be available from Perotti Park Ferry/Harbor Shuttle Docks and Oldport Marina at Bowen's Wharf and will be $10 round trip. Conanicut Marine in Jamestown will also offer a shuttle service for $18 roundtrip.

Admission:  Admission to the Village will be free from June 23 to 27. Admission will be $10 from June 28-July 31. Tickets can be purchased online, at the Newport Gateway Visitor's Center, or at the gate. Children under 12 are free.

Come on do some journalistic justice here. The whole point of this AC World Series is to have the races where they can be seen from shore. Don't say the teams were practicing offshore when they clearly weren't. Your photo shows Eisenhower House in the background. Also for whatever reason Team China backed out. With not even a little research you should have been able to sort that out. I spend seven days a week working on the bay and Newport and the rest of RI needs every tourism dollar we can get. Get the facts right then publish stuff. Don't be as bad as the Journal.
