Alliance of Artists Communities Convenes in Providence

The Alliance of Artists Communities, an international association of artists’ communities and residencies based in Providence, will hold its 20th annual conference, “Advancing Today’s Artists: Boldness + Abundance in a New Economy,” today through Saturday at various locations throughout the capital city, as we reported back in July. Tonight, a special Waterfire, A Starry, Starry Night Installation, will be lit at 5:58pm at the Waterplace Park basin in honor of of the Alliance Conference.
Caitlin Strokosch, the executive director of the Alliance, said the conference celebrates the new and inspiring developments that have evolved despite the current challenging economic climate. “Providence knows that bigger is not always better, and the arts community here offers the perfect backdrop for this convening, with a strong history of collaboration, a high tolerance for the quirky and non-mainstream, and an abundance of creative individuals that have shaped this city,” said Strokosch.
Prominent Participants
More than 150 people from around the globe are expected to attend, including representatives from many prominent organizations. Among them, the New York Foundation for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, The MacDowell Colony, and The Rockefeller Foundation. Keynote speakers include: Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), a composer/musician whose work has included a collaboration with Lady Gaga; Providence’s Clay Rockefeller, artist/activist, whose contributions to the city include working on the development of Monohasset Mill, the co-founding of The Steel Yard, and serving as a consultant and a trustee to a number of non-profits; and Anna Schuleit, a visual artist and RISD alum and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow. An auction and benefit party for the Alliance will be held at the Providence Art Club on Thursday, October 21, from 6-7:30pm. Tickets are $35. Click here for more information.
