Here's a great summer project for young artists.

Hyatt Hotels and Resorts and Canvas Wines, inspired by a love for fine art, are inviting college-level art students to submit what they're calling "their artistic interpretation of the varietal characteristics of Canvas Wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot." There will be one winner for each varietal wine, and each will receive a $5,000 scholarship and have their artwork featured as a label on a special bottling of Canvas Wines.

It's a serious competition. The guidelines spelled out on the Web site, here, direct artists to address one flavor component of each varietal (don't worry, they're listed online), and submit essays as well. Entries will be judged on merit, but will also be subjected to an online popularity poll. But for a shot at labeling a wine developed by the Michael Mondavi family for Hyatt (and there is that $5,000), it may all be worth it.

The competition runs until August 15. For more information, go here. And may the best artist (and one hopes, one from Rhode Island), win.
