Old-fashioned, tasty fun at A&W

In case you haven't noticed, there's a hurricane coming. Take a note from our friends in New Orleans and get a hurricane party planned for Sunday... and before then, take advantage of five must-do's for Friday and Saturday.

Celebrate a local institution in Smithfield

Friday  Don't miss the 50th anniversary of one of Rhode Island's all-time classic spots: the Greenville A&W Root Beer stand. The party goes all day from 11am to 9pm, and includes hourly specials, an A&W history display, dinnertime root beer making demo, classic cars, all-American food, Random Acts of Root Beer, the only carhop service left in Rhode Island, and more! Call 949-9892 or visit the Smithfield A&W web site for more information. 460 Putnam Pike, Smithfield.

Enjoy the pre-Irene waterfront in Providence

Saturday  Take a good look at those water levels lit by fire tonight, at one of the final WaterFires of the season. Add to the usual gorgeous nighttime goings on that the Hurricane Barrier will likely be closed... or closing. Begins, as always, at dusk. Free. Call 272-3111, or visit the WaterFire Web site for more information.

Get spooked in Warwick

Saturday  Spend some time with RI's finest ghost hunters, the East Coast Paranormal Research Team, who will

Belcourt Castle: How haunted does this look to you?

share evidence of ghostly activity at local haunts, including Belcourt Castle, Rose Island Lighthouse, and Fort Adams. 1-4pm, Warwick Public Library, 600 Sandy Lane. Seating is limited, registration suggested. Call 739-5440 x126, or visit the Warwick Public Library Web site for more information.

Party in style in downtown Providence

Saturday  It's a fashion party tonight, as StyleNight Out kicks off StyleWeek Providence fashion happenings. Shops in downcity will be featuring food, drink, a style scavenger hunt, specials and more. It kicks off at Providence Place Mall at 4pm and wraps up with an afterparty at Aspire in Hotel Providence. For the whole schedule, go here.

Enjoy the beat in Woonsocket
