Roots Band The Devil Makes Three Plays Lupo's Tonight

Providence has become home to a serious American roots music scene, a style that is growing in popularity. The “Americana” category was recently added to the Billboard music charts, and many established artists are recording in this genre. It’s sometimes hard to define, so you’ll just have to get this weekend and check out some these bands who play it. If you like Rock and Roll with a mandolin or if you’re tired of the same old county songs on the radio, check out these picks in “5 Live Music Musts.”

Devil Makes Three

Newport Folk Festival veterans The Devil Makes Three return to the area tonight for a show at Lupo’s. The popular roots band just released a new album Redemption and Ruin, their first album in three years. RI’s Huntress and Holder of Hands (Morganeve Swain) and Lost Dog Street Band open at 9PM. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Music starts around 9PM.

Julien Baker at Aurora

A huge crowd gathered in the fort at Newport Folk this summer to see Julien Baker offer a sparse but powerful set. The singer-songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee, released her first solo album Sprained Ankle last year to boundless critical acclaim. Check her out in a small club setting tonight at Aurora. Siana Plavin opens at 9PM.

Z-Boys at Columbus

The Z-Boys are in Providence tonight for a record release party at the Columbus Theatre. The Newport based surf rock trio are a high energy live band and have put together an impressive debut release. Cannibal Ramblers and Northeast Traffic open at 9PM – tickets available here and at the door.

Roots Rock Everywhere

Several local rock shows are happening in Providence tonight. Dusk has a Roots Rock Extravaganza with Consuelo's Revenge, Muddy Ruckus, Michael Graham's EP release and Von Donovan. Nick-a-Nees has Mark Cutler and the Men of Great Courage. And Firehouse 13 has Torn Shorts, The Low Cards and The Little Compton Band. Rock on!

Carrie Underwood

Superstar Carrie Underwood headlines at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Wednesday September 28 in a stop on her “Storytellers” tour. The 7 time Grammy-winning star of stage and screen will be performing on a 360 degree stage “in the round,” a format that Underwood seems to enjoy according to tour reports.
