The Pronk Festival Returns to the Streets of Providence Monday
The holiday weekend brings a mountain of music to the GoLocal area featuring a couple of classic rock bands, a celebration of a classic Providence venue, and a festival of horns. Read on for our top picks in local music in “5 Live Music Musts.”
Lupo’s 40th Anniversary at the Met

RI’s best rock club turns 40 this weekend and the celebration features some top local favorites. The Lupo's anniversary continues tonight with rock and roll from The Schemers, Neutral Nation, Jungle Dogs and Rash. Tomorrow, check out Razzz and members of the Wild Turkey Band with Tom Keegan. And Sunday, don’t miss what is rumored to be final show ever from the most legendary of all RI bands, The Young Adults. RI Music Hall Inductees Georgie Porgie and the Cry Babies open. Badfinger at Stadium Theatre Tonight
Tonight at Woonsocket’s Stadium Theatre, check out Badfinger starring original guitarist Joey Molland. The power pop band with the best haircuts topped the charts in the early 70’s with enduring hits like “Baby Blue,” “Day After Day,” and “No Matter What.” They were the most sucessful band on the Apple label after the Beatles. Lupo's Turns 40 this Weekend
Zombies at Park Saturday
The Zombies were part of the British Invasion of the 1960’s. They’re best known for hits like “She’s Not There,” “Tell Her No,” and “Time of the Season.” They are also well known among enthusiasts to have recorded an album that became a cult favorite and is considered one of the top albums of all time. They’re planning a full play of that album, Odyssey and Oracle, tomorrow night at the Park Theatre. Tickets are still available here – look for a complete review of the show next week on GoLocalProv.
Pronk Festival in Providence Monday
Monday’s holiday means it’s time for the annual Pronk (Providence Honk) Festival. The event is described as “street intervention like no other, with outfits and misfits from Rhode Island and beyond - musicians, artists, activists, makers…” The free event brings together over a dozen brass bands from around the country including RI’s own What Cheer Brigade and the Extraordinary Rendition Band. It’s organized anarchy of the highest form. Music begins Monday at 2:30 at Burnside Park downtown and works its way to India Point Park where the party continues all night long – click here for more information.
Jesse Malin at Firehouse 13 Tonight
Our pick for Indie show of the week goes to Jesse Malin who makes a rare appearance tonight at Firehouse 13 in Providence. Malin’s roots in punk have influenced his career, which has included playing with everyone from Green Day to Bruce Springsteen. After a 5 year hiatus, Malin just released a new album, New York Before the War. Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door with singer songwriter Mathew Ryan opening.

The Zombies
British invasion rockers The Zombies are best known for hits "She's Not There" and "Tell Her No." In 1968, they recorded a critically acclaimed album Odessey and Oracle which including the hit "Time of the Season." A special show in Cranston has them scheduled to play the complete album and more at the Park Theatre on October 10th. Ticket information here.

Chicago ranks high among the all time great bands. According to Billboard magazine, they were the top charting band in the 1970s, and have sold over 100 million albums since forming in the late 60's. Badfinger
Badfinger was a beloved power pop band famous for tunes like "Baby Blue," and "Day After Day." The band saw its heyday in the early 70's, but the untimely deaths of two members led to the demise of the group. Led by founding guitarist Joey Molland, the present incarnation the band is heading to the Stadium Theater in Woonsocket on October 9th. Ticket information here.

Mavis and Joan
The "Solid Soul Tour" brings Mavis Staples and Joan Osborne to the Vets in Providence on November 8th. The one two punch with Staples, formerly of the legendary gospel act The Staples Sisters, along with modern R&B/Folk star Osborne, will make for a great night of music. Ticket information here.

Lupo's Turns 40
The oldest continuous rock club in Providence is celebrating 40 years over the Columbus Day Weekend. The multi night event which will be held at Lupo’s sister club, The Met, features RI music royalty with Duke Robillard, The Schemers, Rizz, Ken Lyon, James Montgomery, Neutral Nation and a rumored final appearance ever of the legendary Young Adults. Coffeehouse Scene
A number of small concert venues in the area have some big acts coming this Fall. The Courthouse Center for the Arts, South County’s leading performance center, has legendary bluesman John Hammond Saturday September 26th. Ticket info here. Indie Scene at Columbus
Things really heat up this time of year at the Columbus Theatre in Providence. Top indie bands like Mother Falcon, David Wax Museum and Shannon and the Clams (pictured) are due this Fall. Roots Scene
The Dave Rawlings Machine featuring Gillian Welch leads the roots-rock line up this season appearing at Lupos on November 14th. Originally from North Smithfield, RI, Rawlings is an in-demand performer playing with artists like Welch, John Paul Jones, Old Crow Medicine Show and Ryan Adams. RI Philharmonic
The Rhode Island Philharmonic has a great season planned. The series kicks off on September 26th with Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto #1. On October 17th, they present Beethoven's 6th Symphony (Pastorale) and on November 14th, don't miss a modern classical program featuring selections from West Side Story.
