Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox Plays Lupos Tonight
Time to go “retro” this week on “5 Live” as we highlight some artists who are fusing new sounds with the old. Read on for our top area picks this week in “5 Live Music Musts.”
Postmodern Jukebox at Lupos
Tonight at Lupo’s in Providence, check out Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, a band made up of a rotating group of musicians who interpret modern songs in a 40-50’s jazz/torch style. With over 100 million views on YouTube, this band has made quite a splash covering songs from Miley Cirus, Sam Smith and Macklemore among others. Tickets are $25, $35 for reserved seating. Doors at 8PM, show begins at 9PM.
Also tonight, head up to Chan’s in Woonsocket for “Egg Rolls and Jazz” with singer/pianist Debra Mann. Tonight’s show is a special tribute to ailing artist Joni Mitchell, and will feature music from the legendary singer-songwriter’s entire career. Performing Joni’s songs is a good fit for Mann, as she is an outstanding performer and much of Mitchell's work is jazz influenced. Tickets are $15 for the 8PM show.
Doo Wop and Rock at The Vets
Tomorrow night, The Vets in Providence goes retro with as they welcome Richard Nader's Doo Wop and Rock & Roll All Stars. Performers include original stars of 50’s and 60’s groups like Shirley Alston Reeves, the original lead of The Shirelles. Also appearing are members of the The Legendary Teenagers, Jay Siegel’s Tokens, The Charlie Thomas Drifters and Tommy Mara and The Crests. These artists were there in the early days on Rock and Roll – check them out in Providence – tickets start at $28 and the fun begins at 8PM. Head back to The Vets on Tuesday for a unique show from Pink Martini, a band that crosses the genres of classical, latin, jazz and pop. Click here for details.
Jon Brooks at Common Fence
Canadian singer-songwriter Jon Brooks will be playing at the final show of the season tomorrow night at Common Fence Music in Portsmouth. A recent tweet on his website describe his music as “dark tunes from the outskirts of roots.” He recently released a new album, The Smiling and Beautiful Countryside - but don’t let the title fool you – this is an album of murder ballads which “focuses on two types of killers – the human and the corporate.” Sounds like fun. See for yourself tomorrow at 8PM – tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.
Pure Prairie League at Courthouse Center for the Arts
Pure Prairie League is an original country-rock band founded in 1969 and known for hits like “Amie” and “Let Me Love You Tonight.” The band, once fronted by country legend Vince Gill, has gone through several personnel changes in recent years but is back on the road and sounding better than ever. They’ll be at the Courthouse Center for the Arts in West Kingston tomorrow night. Tickets are $42 for the 8PM show.

The classic rocker brings his "Plain Spoken" tour to Providence on April 16. On this tour, Mellencamp mixes a healthy dose of songs from his last several albums, along with classics like "Jack and Diane", "Rain on the Scarecrow", and "The Authority Song."

Her newly reconsitituted early 90's alternative rock combo has been getting rave reviews on their current tour, which swings through Providence on April 21. Their SXSW appearance was described as “…a moving and impressively tight set that reminded a good crowd of why she is a trailblazer, and why songs like “Feelin’ Massachusetts” and “President Garfield” and “I Got No Idols” define the dark, honest eloquence of alternative rock.”

Led by Will Lee, the bass player in David Letterman's house band, the Fab Faux painstakingly recreate the sound of the Beatles. On this tour, they're playing the "Rubber Soul" album in it's entirety, along with other hits from the Beatles' vast repertoire.

3 nights at Fenway- The Zac Brown Band is country for people who don't like country, and for those who love country. His backing band is full of astounding musicians, and they do mean Black Sabbath and Metallica covers, too.
All you parrotheads listen up: Jimmy Buffett brings his Coral Reefer Band back to Mansfield for his yearly show. The parking lot scene is almost as anticipated as the concert itself, with mini beach bars and cabanas cropping up everywhere. If you can't have fun at a Jimmy Buffett show, we don't know what to tell you.
Another round of the "really this is it seriously we're gonna retire after this tour but we keep adding shows so who knows if it ever really will end" tour hits Worcester in August. The Crue has one of the best opening acts with them- the legendary Alice Cooper. So make sure you show up early- the warm up set is not to be missed.
AC/DC does everything BIG. Big new album, big tour, big stadium. They bring their over the top rock and roll show to Gillette August 15. A man in his 60's in a school boy uniform, cannons, bagpipes, this show has it all. Fire!
