It’s another strong week on the local music scene. "5 Live Music Musts" previews some major shows from top singer-songwriters, a legendary guitarist, and a community orchestra featuring guest soloists with international reputations. Check out our slide show below for all the details.

Julie Rhodes in PVD

Boston based Julie Rhodes has made a mark on the local scene, playing countless shows as she developed her vocal chops. Last week, she released her first album, Bound to Meet the Devil, recorded at the legendary FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The album has been heavily praised in major national sites/zines like American Songwriter, Paste Magazine and PopMatters. Don’t miss her album release party Saturday at the Columbus Theatre. David Wilcox in Newport

Tomorrow night, Common Fence Music welcomes singer-songwriter David Wilcox to Newport’s Channing Church. The Ashville, NC resident is a veteran performer who has labored successfully in the folk genre for almost three decades. His voice has been compared to James Taylor, and his strong songwriting has led to him being labeled a “songwriter’s songwriter.” Show begins at 8PM at Channing Church in Newport. Boxcar Lilies in PWT

The Boxcar Lilies are a folk/roots band known for great songwriting and sweet harmonies. Jenny Goodspeed (electric bass, guitar), and Stephanie Marshall (washboard, guitar),  lead the trio that recently released a new album, Knockout Rose. Tomorrow night at the Stone Soup Coffeehouse, check out the first show featuring guest vocalist Susan Catteneo, along with sideman Jim Henry (guitar, mandolin, etc..) to round things out. Tickets are $18 and available here. Davey O opens at 7PM.

Jorma Kaukonen in EG

A great run of shows continues at the Greenwich Odeum Sunday night with a solo show from legendary guitarist Jorma Kaukonen. Jorma is best known for two seminal bands he played in, Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. He’s a great storyteller and a legend in guitar circles (#54 all-time according to Rolling Stone Magazine) and runs Fur Peace Ranch, a summer “camp” for aspiring axe players, in Ohio. NABSCO at RIC

Classical music fans and those curious about the majestic genre will want check out the Narragansett Bay Symphony Community Orchestra on Sunday. Under the baton of Musical Director Benjamin Vickers, the top community based orchestra in RI provides a wonderful opportunity for fans to experience symphonic music in a live setting. Sunday’s concert features internationally known pianist and RIC Professor Judith Stillman along with soloists Charles Dimmick, violin, and Aristides Rivas, cello. The program includes compositions from Beethoven, Debussy and Wagner. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for kids - concert is at 3PM Sunday at Sapinsley Hall at Rhode Island College.
