Indie Pop Favorites Lucius Play Waterplace Park Tonight
Starting today, Newport is the center of the musical universe with over 10 days of music bookended by two iconic festivals. Even though the Newport Folk Festival is sold out, there are a ton of evening shows this weekend in the “City by the Sea” and a week of BridgeFest events to follow. There’s also some great rock and roll at Xfinity Sunday and hip indie tunes tonight at Waterplace Park.

Lucius Tonight
Brooklyn’s indie pop band Lucius are led by Jess Wolfe are Holly Laessig, two women who met at the Berklee School of Music in 2005. They’ve built a loyal following since, and even played the Newport Folk Festival in 2014. Tonight, their indie pop sounds will fill Waterplace Park as part of the Summer Concert Series. Providence rockers Math the Band open around 7PM with Lucius taking the stage at 8PM. As always, admission is free.

Folk Festival all Weekend
Newport Folk weekend is finally here. This year, the Festival welcomes dozens of top acts including Patti Smith, Ray LaMontagne, Norah Jones and Elvis Costello. Music begins at 11AM at Ft. Adams State Park starting today with over 50 artists scheduled. Wear some sunscreen, be patient in traffic and respect thy neighbor. That’s all you need to do enjoy the top music attraction of the year!

Rock Legends at Xfinity
Three classic bands and tons of cool guitars invade the Xfinity Center in Mansfield Sunday when Heart, Cheep Trick and Joan Jett and the Blackhawks perform. All three band are now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - we promise you’ll be in rock heaven all night long! Music starts at 6:30PM and tickets are still available here at only $30.

Newport After-Parties
Deer Tick’s annual after show parties headline Newport after dark this weekend. The Rhode Island band plays all three festival nights at the Newport Blues Café. There are also “official” festival shows with bands like Shovels and Ropes, Larkin Poe, and Ballroom Thieves. Finally, there are unofficial shows all over town with top local and touring bands. BridgeFest Next Week
Bridgefest is a weeklong celebration of all things Newport Folk and Jazz. Over a dozen shows are intended to bridge the two festivals together while featuring a lot of local talent front and center. Highlights include Trumpeter Doug Woolverton’s sextet playing “A Tribute to Miles Davis” at the Jane Pickens Theatre next Thursday July 28 and the Family Concert with Alastair Moock and the Newport Jazz Assembly next Wednesday July 27.
