Here’s some of the best in area music happening over the long holiday weekend…
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
First up, celebrate tonight at (where else, on this holiday weekend,) the Columbus Theatre with hip indie star Bonnie “Prince” Billy. The indie-roots artist and sometimes actor, born Will Oldham, continues to make critically acclaimed music that is hard to categorize. Go to the show and you’ll see why. Music starts at 9PM with opening act Arborea. Tickets are $20.
Susan Cowsill
On Saturday night, head to Manchester 65 in West Warwick for a rare area show featuring Susan Cowsill. She’s the cute little sister from the RI Music Hall of Fame family band The Cowsills, the group who inspired the Partridge Family. (YouTube them, you’ll understand!) Her solo gigs tend to favor a more folk–rock approach, but don’t be surprised to hear about the “flower girl.” Kari Tieger along with local artists Ray Cooke and Lisa Coutu open the evening at 8PM. Tickets are only $15.

This is a unique event led by local favorites What Cheer? Brigade and the Extraordinary Rendition Band. The free family oriented festival begins at 2PM at India Point Park. Music continues into the night. Check the schedule for details.
UFO
Also on Monday, check out a rare appearance by the English rock group UFO. The band is playing at the Narrows Center in Fall River. You’ll hear their classics along with new songs from the album “Seven Deadly.” They rarely tour the States -Tickets are $49 and going fast. Louis St. August & Gene D'Itria of Mass opens the show at 8PM.
Pearl Jam
Finally, next Tuesday and Wednesday, Rocktober peaks in Worcester with two big shows from one of the top rock and roll bands ever, Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder and crew are playing two nights at the DCU Center (formerly the Centrum) and they arrive on the day of their new release, “Lightening Bolt.” Its streaming now on Itunes, so you can preview it all weekend. The first night is sold out, some seats remain for the Wednesday show – which will certainly sell out. Tickets are expensive – $92– but its freakin’ Pearl Jam! Well worth the drive up to Worcester!
