Introducing 5 Music Musts, a weekly set of GoLocal Music Critics Rob Duguay and Ken Abrams picks for the best in live music in the area.
It’s springtime, and for some reason, Reggae music just sounds better this time of year. Some great local and national reggae acts are playing around town this weekend. On Friday, May 3, Sandywoods has the High Hopes Band and the Ocean State Rollers. On Saturday May 4, Lupo’s has Rebelution, a band that combines elements of roots, rock and reggae. The California based band has built a huge following and received widespread critical acclaim.
Saturday night also features a local performance from the legendary John Hammond at the legendary Chans in Woonsocket. The award winning Blues guitarist, son of the well known producer, has performed over 4000 shows in his career. Hammond, who is said to have introduced Bob Dylan to The Band, has played with countless Blues and Rock legends. The show is well worth the ride up to Woonsocket – where you can enjoy egg rolls and Blues. A legendary evening awaits!

Finally, the Blackstone Valley Theater in Cumberland is presenting the Maeve Gilchrist Trio on Sunday May 5. Gilchrist, a Scottish harpist, has been praised for her traditional interpretations and original work. Fans of Celtic music will not want to miss this one!
