The Wilson sisters of Heart, who blazed the trail for rocking women, take the Comcast stage this weekend to benefit the Station Fire Memorial Fund.

No excuses this weekend – lots of free and low priced shows in town. Get out and enjoy some music! 

Tonight, Friday June 28, the Station Fire Memorial Fund benefits as the Comcast Center welcomes Heart and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience. Let’s not forget the importance of Heart, recent Rock Hall inductees, the Wilson sisters inspiring generations of girls to Rock! And the Bonham Experience is said to be better than the original – maybe it’s in their blood? Good seats still available – Tickets start at $32.00 – Show at 7:30.

On Saturday, start off at 3PM at an in-store performance at What Cheer RecordsTim Woulfe and Allysen Callery both appear in support of new releases. Drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen among others, Woulfe cites influences including The Velvet Underground and Bjork.  Callery captures the 70’s British Folk Revival sound – her new release,Tumblin’ Sue should be getting a lot of attention. Oh, and did we mention, free Gansett’s for those (old enough) in attendance.

After you find that LP you’ve been looking for at What Cheer, grab a quick dinner and a refreshing beverage on Thayer, and then head down to the Roger Williams National Park on North Main to check out the Downtown Sundown Series. This summer series, a program of “Hear in Rhode Island,” features different local artists each week. This week, its Kerri Powers, Kris Hansen, Dan Lilly and Scatman, and Malyssa Bellarosa. The free show starts at 7:00 PM.

Also, Saturday, head to The Narrows Center to hear singer/songwriter Slaid Cleaves. His newly released album, Still Fighting the War is getting great reviews, and lots of mainstream media attention. The title song is a brilliant account of the challenges facing recent veterans. His songwriting is direct and powerful – catch him now before this album takes off! A new festival hits the area this weekend – the first annual Mystic Blues Festival takes place in various venues around the Mystic/Westerly area.  Several big names in Blues will be in town – James CottonRoomful of BluesJaimoe Johanson (Allman Brothers), Johnny Nicholas and HellbentDebbie Davies, and many many more. Click here for more details.
