The big day approaches...the Newport Folk Festival and all the glorious things that come with it awaits music lovers this weekend.

The area’s summer concert season reaches its peak this weekend in Newport. The venerable Newport Folk Festival has finally arrived.

Newport Folk

Let’s just come right out and declare the Newport Folk Festival to be the greatest music festival in America. Its historic significance is beyond reproach, its scenic beauty unrivaled, and it’s a known fact that everyone in the folk-rock-roots community wants to play there.

There’s a youth movement going on; this year is dominated by younger artists who fully appreciate the significance of playing "the greatest music festival in America.” There are too many talented artists to mention–check the website. Headliners include Feist on Friday, the Avett Brothers on Saturday, and the incomparable Beck on Sunday. Many others, including the Lumineers, Jim James, Andrew Bird, and the legendary Ramblin’ Jack Elliot appear as well. Saturday and Sunday have been sold out for months, a few tickets remain for Friday. Look for a complete review of the festival next week right here at GoLocalProv.

The official and unofficial after-parties have grownin recent years. Friday and Saturday, you can spend An Evening with Dawes and Friends at the Jane Pickens Theater. This 21+ event promises to be a great time. If anyone has an extra ticket, grab it, and find out what surprises await, as both shows are completely sold out.

At another renowned event, Deer Tick and friends are partying all weekend at the Newport Blues Café. Artists including Slim Langhorne and Jason Isbell have already committed, and you never know who else may show up. If you want to go, hope you have a ticket–all shows are sold out!

Metal Fest at Dusk

Also this weekend, if you like your music a little noisier, go local in Providence Saturday and Sunday for the Something Bloody Metal Fest. Dusk is the place to be, with two stages and the likes of Dawnbringer, Lolita Black, Witch King, Hessian, Dehumanized and Churchburn among many others blowing the roof of the place. Doors open both days at 1:00 PM–tickets are $34.99 for both days. Don’t forget to wear some earplugs.

One Republic in Newport

If you stay in Newport till Tuesday, July 30, check out pop-rock sensation One Republic at the Sunset Music Series. Their song “Apologize,” made history in 2007, with the most ever radio plays during the first week of release. In an interview with GoLocalProv, drummer Eddie Fisher noted the worldwide appeal of the band–they recently played to huge crowds in Beirut and Algiers. When asked about the band’s success, he explained “the band makes connections with its audience” and promised you’d “shake your butt and sing the chorus” at the Newport show. Meyer Hawthorne and Serena Ryder open; local hero Dylan Sevey opens on the Point Stage. Tickets start at $39.50–shows starts at 5:00.
