5 Live Music Musts – February 14, 2014
Friday, February 14, 2014
We begin tonight at Cranston’s beloved Park Theatre where Grammy award winner Dr. John is performing. Best known for his hits, “Right Place, Wrong Time,” and “Such a Night,” the legendary New Orleans artist continues to make great music. His recent album Tribal, brought a return to the classic swampy gris-gris style that made him famous. After the concert, be sure to stick around the Park for a special New Orleans themed after-party. A few tickets remain starting at $35. Show is at 8PM.
Kool and the Gang
Celebrate good times tonight at Twin River with a show from legendary 70’s disco funk act Kool and the Gang. The band’s mega-hit “Celebrate” will undoubtedly be heard in eternity; we suspect they’ll bring all the hits to tonight’s show. So “bring your good times and your laughter too…” Doors open at 7PM - show starts promptly at 8PM. A few tickets remain starting at $42.50.
Pete Seeger Memorial Concert
Share the love for the late Pete Seeger tonight at Sandywoods in Tiverton, where a memorial concert is being held. Seeger’s daughter Mika and husband Joe Bossom previously owned the land around Sandywoods; both were instrumental in developing the unique community that exists there today. Local artists including Bill Harley, Joyce Katzberg and Jimmy Warren, Atwater-Donnelly, John Fuszek, Sallie Rogers and Howie Bursen, and Art Tebbetts will be celebrating the life and music of the folk icon. There’s no charge, but donations to the artists are encouraged. Doors at 6:30, music at 7PM.
A Country Music valentine is in town tonight at the Ryan Center where Justin Moore performs. He’s riding the wave of his latest release “Off the Beaten Path,” which reached #1 on the country music charts late last year. Head to URI where Randy Houser and Josh Thompson also appear. Tickets start at $29.75. Show begins at 7:30.
Jumping ahead to next week, there are a couple of “not to be missed” acoustic shows on the horizon. First, head toFete on Monday February 17 where multi-instrumentalist Leyla McCalla, formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, is in town. She’ll be playing tunes from her new album, Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes. It’s a full night of music with The Sugar Honey Iced Tea, Allysen Callery, and K.C. Moaners beginning at 7PM. Doors open at 6pm. Tickets only $8. And on Thursday February 20, the Narrows Center has acclaimed Delta Blues artist Kelly Joe Phelps. The slide guitarist recently released a killer new album, Brother Sinner and the Whale. Local singer-songwriter Sarah Azriel, who blends pop, folk and soul, opens at 8PM. Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 day of show.
